Project #1: modified gyotaku
I had previously done a Gyotaku at a summer camp, but my work in art class was much improved and more detailed. I didn't realize that I had chosen cool colors until we discussed it in class. I knew that I wanted to use this middle aqua-green color and then to add some dimension I added the blue to the edges and fins. These colors remind me of the beach and the different colors water can have.
To begin, the rubber fish was cleaned of left over color and then using watercolors I painted it both the blue and aqua-green. I had to make sure to not use to much water because the paper would spread the paint if to much water was on the fish. I placed the mulberry paper onto the fish and gently pressed it down, then pulled off the paper and allowed it too dry. Once the paper and paint had dried we then could go back to the picture with watercolor pencils and colored pencils to modify and imperfections that had been caused in the process. I added some variations of green to the center area of the fish and filled in areas that had no paint. I had to then wet mounted the painting which supports the original paper and makes the paintings colors pop.
I'm very happy to be taking art this semester and plan to take advantage of the time I am allotted to work. Art is very calming and
soothing for me, so after stressful classes art is a great way to end the day.

Assignment #2: independent project proposal
The original idea for my independent art project was based around koi fish. They symbolize many things, including good fortune, success, serenity, and peace. I then decided to add the word peace in Japanese calligraphy to portray the cultures inspiration on my painting.
